A team of researchers discovered that a spring in the Quehuisha mountains of Peru is the real source of the Amazon river. They say satellite images give credibility to their claim.
Researchers confirmed on Wednesday that a gorge in the Caylloma region of Peru is the source of the Amazon river.
[Jacek Palkiewicz, Researcher]:
"After all the scientific research, our expedition Amazon Source 96, came to the conclusion that the world's largest river rises in the snowy Quehuisha 5150 meters above the sea."
The expedition group and the Geographical Society of Lima established a spring in the Gorge Apacheta, at the foothills of the Quehuisha mountains as the birthplace of the river.
The group along with people from local communities visited the area last weekend to unveil a plaque to mark the exact point.
The snow capped mountains are located near the city of Arequipa, in the south of Peru.
An earlier expedition in 2000 by National Geographic had identified a stream in the
Misma mountains located east of Quehuisha as the source of the Amazon river.
But the Geographical Society of Lima says the latest find is more credible and that recent satellite images give greater scientific weight to their theory.
Efforts are underway to get authorities of the Caylloma region to declare 475 square kilometers of Andean highlands as protected territory.
