An overloaded ferry capsized and sank in a river in central China on Friday, killing more than ten people, including nine students. Authorities are still searching for three people who are missing.

Eleven people have drowned and another 16 injured after a ferry capsized and sank in a river in central China on Friday.

The ferry was carrying 45 people -- most of whom were students and the two boat owners -- when the accident took place in Fuyi River in Hunan Province, Chinese state run media reported.

The overloaded boat was chartered by local schools to send students back home across the river. It capsized after it ran into iron cables used for dredgers underwater.

11 bodies were recovered from the river by Saturday morning. The search is continuing for three people who are still missing.

The nine students who died were from local primary and middle schools. They were on their way home for the Mid-Autumn Festival -- a traditional Chinese holiday for family reunions.

The two ferry owners, who managed to escape from the deadly wreck with another 13 passengers, are in police custody as local authorities investigate the cause of the accident, state media said.

The injured passengers are being treated at a local hospital.
