A British man has been killed and his wife kidnapped near the Somali border in Kenya. No one is claiming responsibility for the attack, but the south of Somalia, bordering Kenya, is mainly controlled by al Qaeda linked rebels.

Kenya on Sunday confirmed the killing of a UK citizen in an attack at a remote coastal tourist lodge and said that its security forces were on high alert on the anniversary of September 11.

Kenyan Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere confirmed the attack led to the death of a British man and the abduction of a British woman.

[Mathew Iteere, Kenya Police Commissioner]:
"Early this morning Sunday 11 September, at about 12:30 am, some bandits attacked a tourist resort - by name Kiwayu Safari Village on Kiwayu Island in Kiyunga division of Lamu west district on the sea front. During the attack they shot dead one David Tebbut, a British national.”

His wife Judith, who was the only other guest at the hotel was abducted.

The killing and abduction came as al-Qaeda-linked militants staged attacks on government-held positions inside Somalia, which also spilled into Kenya.

[Mathew Iteere, Kenya Police Commissioner]:
"We sent a signal to all our police stations so that we can be more vigilant, especially regarding our vital installations. To be vigilant on our borders - already we have sent more reinforcements, especially in the northeastern province, more roadblocks especially leading to once or coming from northeastern province and coastal province. Those we have done and we are going to continue, not just because of this incident, we had done it because of that anniversary of September 11."

The British Foreign Office confirmed the nationalities of the two individuals. It said it was working to secure the immediate safe release of the woman...
