Where’s the best place to live in the world? Well, according to this year’s Global Livability Survey, it’s right here in Melbourne, Australia. Our correspondent has the story.

Melbourne, Australia is named the most livable city in the world in the latest Global Livability Survey. Melbourne is ranked above Vancouver, Canada for the top spot. Three other Australian cities are in the top ten.

[Robert Doyle, Lord Mayor of Melbourne]:
“It’s about tourism and encouraging people to come to Melbourne. It’s about our businesses; it’s about attracting things like major events. But it does make you feel very proud of your city.”

Melbourne scored on a number of indicators, including political and social stability, crime rates, health care, and diversity of cultural events.

[Sarah Day, Community Manager]:
“If I was going to live in any big city in Australia it’d be right here in Melbourne.”

[Simone Agius, Design Student]:
“Everything is quite accessible around Melbourne. Everyone is really friendly. If you need advice, if you can’t find where you are going, everyone is so friendly. So it’s a pleasure to live in Melbourne.”

Melbourne also hosts a number of impressive world-class events. That includes theater performances like Shen Yun Performing Arts. And for sporting fans, there’s the Grand Prix, the Australian Open and the prestigious Melbourne Cup.

The annual Global Livability Survey reviews one hundred and forty cites around the world to determine the best and the worst living conditions. The survey is released each year by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
