A professional Chinese mountain rescue team has been set up in Tibet, home of some of the world's highest mountains. The team is the first of its kind.

A professional Chinese mountain rescue team was formed in Lhasa, the capital of Tibet on Sunday. This is the first such team to be established and is capable of performing rescue operations in high altitude areas.

With professional rescuers and advanced equipment, the mountain rescue team can perform complex rescue tasks, as well as being available to support other departments, such as medical, transportation, firefighting, communications and military departments. The team can provide a complete rescue service in the Mount Everest area.

Nyima Tsering, Head of the Tibet Mountain Rescue Team, said the number of climbers is increasing, and the team can help ensure their safety.

[Nyima Tsering, Head of Tibet Mountain Rescue Team]:
"Many Chinese and foreign climbing enthusiasts come to Tibet every year, and the number of climbing enthusiasts is growing, thanks to the improvement in Chinese people's living standards. A well-trained professional rescue team may ensure the safety of climbers."

Mountaineering is a dangerous sport, requiring specialist equipment as well as training. With more and more amateur climbers attempting Tibet's famous mountain peaks, a professional mountain rescue team is essential.
