The Chinese regime has proposed changes to a criminal law. The new law would allow police to detain suspects in secret locations for up to six months, instead of just putting them under house arrest. According to state-run media, it would apply to cases involving state security, corruption, or terrorism.
Rights activists and legal experts are concerned. They say it would allow the regime to justify the secret detentions of dissidents—like artist Ai Weiwei and Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. They were both detained at secret locations for several months before being formally arrested.
