This week, Beijing Party secretary Liu Qi issued a warning to Internet companies across China to tighten their control over content. That’s according to a report in the state-run Beijing Daily.

After visiting Sina Corp., a company that runs a popular microblogging site in China, Liu warned Internet companies against spreading (quote) “fake and harmful” information.

During the Arab Spring revolutions that toppled the governments in Egypt and Tunisia, social networking sites played a key role. The Chinese regime views the Internet, particularly social networking websites, as a possible threat to its power.

Many Internet activists have already been detained and arrested in authorities’ ongoing crackdown against dissent.
