Unum, one of the largest disability insurance companies in the US, has had numerous lawsuits filed against it by its policyholders. These suits accuse Unum of bad faith insurance practices by denying many legitimate long-term disability claims. Unum justified its denial by using suspicious tactics, such as changing policies without the policyholder’s knowledge, obtaining opinions from unqualified individuals, denying a claim without any medical examination, and many more. Unum was investigated by the Department of Labor, and ordered to reevaluate over two hundred thousand claims that it had previously denied.
