Rescuers are trying to reach 26 miners trapped underground in a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province.

Forty-five miners were underground when the pit in Boli County was flooded with underground water. Only nine miners escaped according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.

Local mine authorities say it will take at least three days to pump out all the water.

The mine belongs to Hengtai Coal Mining Co. Ltd. State-run media CCTV reports it was ordered to halt production in 2007, but had remained in operation illegally.
