Introduction to Yarn Textures - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. Yarn comes in a lot of different textures. Texture can be achieved by mixing different kinds of yarns together or by actually inserting things into the yarn. Something like this, which almost looks furry or feathery, I think it is 100% rayon but that is going to give you sort of like a feathery look if you want to add it as trim to something. Something like this, what they have actually done is they have taken different yarns and tied them together. So they will take strands of wool and alpaca and rayon and nylon and metallic and they will tie it all together so that as you are knitting the texture sort of changes row by row. A wool like this is actually wool that has other kinds of yarn and textures woven throughout it. So you will find sort of metallics, maybe some feathers, some sequins, some sparkles. It will change as you are knitting it. But it is all woven throughout the yarn as opposed to this. Something like this actually is mohair but it actually has felted balls on it that can be moved throughout the yarn depending on how you want it to hang. So you can create a cowell that has all these hanging felted wool balls hanging down from it. This mohair has a little bit of metallic and has some ribbons. So as you are knitting it, the ribbons will start popping out all over your piece. It would be really nice as a cowell or maybe as wrist warmers as an accent. This yarn actually has smaller bits of yarn that spring out of it as you are knitting. so you will knit a flat piece and then pieces will start popping up of the different colors that are in the yarn. That gives your knitted piece a texture in a different way. This is brushed surrey. It is actually baby surrey and marino and bamboo. It sort of knits like a cloud. It is very very soft, it is very light but it is also very warm. So it is perfect for a thin looking fall garment that sort of drapes beautifully on you. The texture of it is like a rabbit so it will look very, very beautiful. This yarn has created texture by added beads and sequins to it. So it will sort of have a very sparkly, nubbly appearance to it as you are knitting with it but also be very soft because it is silk and cashmere. And finally, this yarn, which actually is a thin strand of yarn with very, very bulky fat pieces of nylon and acrylic woven into it. It is going to pop out as you are knitting. It is not going to look this thin, it is going to look almost like a muppet. Really nice for hats, baby hats, baby gloves or even a baby blanket.
