In southwest China, a long dry spell in Guizhou Province has destroyed the crops. Both drinking and irrigation water have run out.

In China's southwest Guizhou Province, an ongoing drought has ruined hopes for a corn and rice harvest. All crops have withered from the heat and more than 40,000 are in need of water.

The worst hit is Shiqian County, where the local river used for irrigation and drinking water has completely dried up.

A villager explains the situation.

[Shi Shiqian, Villager from Shiqian County]:
"The water level of the river used to be up here and there was a big flow through the aqueduct in a normal year. But now it is like this."

Locals are currently relying on an emergency water station set up by officials. However, not everyone can easily access it.

Currently, people are searching the mountains for new sources of water nearby.
