Choosing Fabrics for Upholstery

Choosing Fabrics for Upholstery - as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. There is a lot of overlap between drapery and upholstery. On the heavier side of things, you can use the home dec weight for upholstery as well. It is again like a medium to heavy weight canvas, it is sturdy, it is not going to stretch out of shape with being sat on constantly. If you wanted something with a little more texture to it the velveteen could be appropriate for that. Some of the things that you are going to want to think about with your upholstery project are: who is using it and how often it is getting used. If it is a baby or a small child and you need to have it wiped down constantly, something like a coated cotton or an oil cloth could be appropriate for that if it is like kitchen chairs covering the seats. This is something that... the coated cotton tends to be more pliable and softer to the touch than the oil cloth. It will be easier to kind of wrap around corners and staple into place. Price-wise, coated cottons tend to run more expensive than oil cloth. Other things that you can use, this is a hemp organic cotton canvas blend which is a nice sturdy fabric.
