A Chinese submersible completed a test dive in the northeastern Pacific Ocean last Thursday—carrying three crewmembers to a depth more than 13,000 feet.

The team planned a second dive to more than 16,000 feet. The plan was postponed due to strong winds and high sea waves.

Sir Richard Branson of the Virgin Group hopes to break the deep-sea diving record with his single-crew submarine. The Virgin Oceanic, with an operating depth of 37,000 feet, will conduct its first dive to the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean.

Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and US Navy oceanographer Don Walsh completed the deepest-ever expedition to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in 1960.
