Lumbar Spine Surgery Vertebrectomy Corpectomy with cage + plate medicolegal exhibit 3D animations. Illustrates the surgical technique for performing a lumbar corpectomy, also known as a lumbar vertebrectomy. This procedure is used to remove one or more vertebral bodies and the adjacent intervertebral discs that are causing uncontrollable pain or are compressing the adjacent spinal cord or nerve roots. A metal cage is being used to replace the excised tissue and maintain correct alignment. An anterior plate is used to ensure stability while fusion occurs. There are many different techniques to achieve the same end result, a pain-free, stable, anatomically positioned bony fusion. However, the basic procedure illustrated here is common to all lumbar corpectomies. Also shown is the removal of the pathological vertebral body and discs, the metal cage insertion, the anterior plate fixation.
