On Saturday, the Vatican excommunicated a Chinese ordained bishop for lack of papal approval. This furthers an already tense relationship between Communist-backed Churches and the Pope.

Despite already having a Vatican-recognized Bishop in the city, Bishop Joseph Huang Bingzhang was ordained in Guangdong Province’s Shantou City by the state.

Pope Benedict XVI denounced the state-church, saying that he (quote) "once again deplores the manner in which the church in China is being treated."

There are 8 – 12 million Catholics in China, whose loyalties are divided between state-backed churches and the Pope.
