Thailand's outgoing Prime Minister urges Cambodia to hold bilateral talks. This comes after the United Nations highest court orders the two countries to pull their soldiers from around a disputed temple. There is a mixed reaction on the streets of Bangkok.
Thailand urged Cambodia to engage in talks after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered both sides to pull out soldiers at their disputed border on Monday.
The highest United Nations court ordered the two neighbors to withdraw from a newly defined demilitarized zone around a temple and to revive talks to resolve the decades-old conflict.
The outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said the outcome would depend on discussions.
[Abhisit Vejjajiva, Thai Prime Minister]:
"It depends on the talk between the two sides. According to the court, both sides have to withdraw their military personnel. There has to be some kind of mechanism to verify to do it in orderly manner. Therefore, it depends on the two sides to come together and talk because I've not yet heard from Cambodia how they react but GBC is a natural mechanism to take us forward."
The prime minister was referring to General Border Committee, a bilateral mechanism co-chaired by defense ministers of the two countries.
Cambodia had filed a complaint earlier this year to ICJ to remove Thai troops out of the long-disputed area surrounding the Preah Vihear temple.
On the streets of Bangkok, there was mixed reaction to the court ruling.
[Manit Moonmanee, Taxi Driver]:
"It's good. We don't have to keep fighting. We withdraw, they withdraw. Its fair."
Others said Thailand should not back off.
