A fire that broke out in a coal mine in east China's Shandong Province Wednesday has trapped 28 workers underground.

According to local authorities, an underground air compression device caught fire on Wednesday evening at the mine in Zaozhuang.

Sixty-three miners have managed to escape as of Thursday morning.

Rescue operations are still in progress.

The coal mine had been upgraded last year, and had passed inspection last October.
