Time travelling? Straddling the millennia? These are feelings one might get when visiting Khajuraho. This is Part 5 of the trip of our India Wow trip! Our Travel Diva Hessie + tony of ad Guida Video Productions went on location in India in February 2011 with some like-minded travelers.
The ancient Temples of Khajuraho should not be dubbed the Kama Sutra Temples, as we’re told some Westerners have. Even if there is some connection, something not known for certain, the ancient temples are a great deal more than and different from that extraordinary courtship and love making guide. First is their arresting beauty. Also, the extensive bas relief stone temple carvings provide the only detailed record of the culture and society of the Chandella Rajput Clan that built these temples between 950 -1150 CE in the remote kingdom then under their control. They left no written history. Though the part setting probably doesn’t reflect the scene 1000 years ago, of which there is no record, it further heightens the mystery and beauty of the remaining temples. The Indian Government, assisted by the UN, has done a terrific job. Khajuraho, truly a “Wonder of India” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
