Last week, we told you about a chemical spill of carbolic acid, which leaked into the Xi'an River, contaminating natural drinking water. Now, in Hangzhou, China, residents are panicking, buying bottled water.

Following news of the accident, Hangzhou residents rushed to supermarkets to stock up on bottled water, buying five or six cases at a time. Even at 6.9 yuan per bottle, several Hangzhou supermarkets ran out of stock by June 6th.

The truck accident which caused the frenzied water-buying took place on June 4th. Twenty tons of carbolic acid leaked into Xin'an River—an important upstream water source for Hangzhou City.

As of 8pm on June 5th, official tests from the Hangzhou City environmental monitoring center state that water from the Hangzhou water plant remains uncontaminated. Presently, the various water plants across the city are working at full capacity to refill the water stock.
