The Chinese regime is hosing down suggestions it's behind a wave of cyber attacks directed at email accounts. News surfaced last week that Internet giants Yahoo! and Microsoft had been targeted in similar attacks to those announced by Google earlier in the week. The news has raised an international outcry over Internet security.

The Chinese regime is denying claims that it supports hacking as "groundless." It comes after reports that cyber attackers had targeted email services run by Microsoft and Yahoo!

Last week Internet giant Google announced hundreds of Google mail accounts had been attacked by China-based hackers—including accounts belonging to senior U.S. government officials, Chinese activists and journalists.

On Friday Internet security firm Trend Micro warned Hotmail and Yahoo! mail accounts had also been targeted, and the attacks had "significant similarities."

But the Chinese regime said it's unacceptable to blame them for the attacks.

[Hong Lei, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman]:
"Hacking is an international problem. China is also a victim of hacking. Claims that the Chinese government supports hacking activities are totally groundless and are driven by an ulterior motive."

The attacks have raised an international outcry over Internet security. The U.S. government is investigating Google's claims while the FBI is working with Google.

Beijing Film Academy Professor Cui Weiping—a staunch critic of the Chinese regime—said her email accounts were often hacked. The settings of her account were altered to forward emails to other addresses.

[Professor Cui Weiping, Beijing Film Academy]:
"If someone wants to get into my inbox and enters it, then that's a violation of the Constitution."
