The Chinese regime has imposed what residents are calling 'martial law' on Inner Mongolia. Security forces sealed off several parts of the region and its capital Hohhot on Sunday to prevent a mass protest that was planned for today. Residents are telling the Associated Press that Internet access has been disabled, as well.
It comes after a week of protests calling for the rights of Mongolian people to be respected. It was sparked by the death of a Mongolian herder, who was run over by an ethnic Han Chinese truck driver. The protests are the largest the region has seen in 20 years.
Students led one of the largest protests, with thousands taking to the streets in Xilinhot, on Wednesday. Officials reportedly detained high school students over the weekend to stop them from protesting again. Most social media, text messaging, and Internet chatting sites that helped the students to organize the protest were shut down.
Tensions run high in the region similar to what happened in Tibet after the 2008 protests, and Xinjiang after the 2009 protests.
Residents fear the traditional ways of life--based on herding sheep and cattle--are disappearing due to the encroachment of mines and urban sprawl on the region's grasslands.
