North Korean leader Kim Jong-il is visiting China apparently to learn about the country's economic development, the South Korean government said over the weekend.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao confirmed the trip with South Korean President Lee Myungbak on Sunday when the two met in Japan. This kind of openness about Kim's visit is unusual, as they're usually not confirmed until the end of his trips.

Kim is believed to have arrived in China on Friday in his third trip there in one year. On Monday he was seen touring a lake in the eastern city of Yangzhou.

The reclusive leader of the poverty stricken North Korea is said to be in China to study economic development. The two communist nations are close allies, and the North relies heavily on its neighbor for economic and military aid.

Some analysts question whether Kim is willing to undertake economic reform, because it may undermine his family's long hold on power in the country.
