Taiwan is conducting a nuclear drill simulating Japan's nuclear crisis. Japan's nuclear crisis following the March 11 earthquake, has raised concerns about the safety of nuclear power plants in Taiwan.
Teams from Taiwan's emergency services carried out a nuclear drill on Wednesday. They simulated a multi-disaster situation based on the nuclear crisis that followed Japan's March 11 earthquake.
The two-day nuclear drill includes simulations of power supplies failing at a nuclear power plant.
Firefighters sprayed foam on a simulated fire, while teams dressed in protective gear operated a remote control robot. The robot measures radiation and sends video images of the site.
The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that triggered a deadly tsunami across large swaths of northeastern Japan struck nearly 200 miles northeast of Taiwan.
The nuclear crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant has raised new concerns about the safety of nuclear power plants in Taiwan. Taiwan currently has three active nuclear power plants, and a fourth one is under construction.
