125-Year-Old Horse Race Begins in Southern India

In southern India, a high-altitude horse race with a long history. This race was started 125 years ago--in 1886--by the British, and it's still popular today, here in Ooty in India's southern Tamil Nadu [TAM-il NAH-du] state.

Ooty is a popular hill station, and the local tourism industry is depending on the horse race to bring in tourists during the summer.

More than 500 horses from all over the country will take part in the race, which will last through the month of May.
