There's been plenty of rain in Northern India but locals in Himachal Pradesh are facing water shortages. In one village, residents have to walk more than a mile to get their water.
This is Baldyan village in Shimla, the capital city of northern India's Himachal Pradesh state.
Despite the fact that this region has recorded good rainfall the locals here are facing severe water shortages.
Each day they walk for over a mile to fetch water from a pond in the outskirts of the village.
Residents say the authorities are not addressing the problem.
[Pushpa Devi, Local Resident]:
"It has been over a month that we have been facing the water shortage in the region. And none of the concerned authorities has taken care of our problem. Though there is no drought yet, we are facing water shortages. We are unable to fill four containers for drinking water, so where will we get water for our animals?"
The Irrigation and Public Health Department blames the local pipelines which are old and need replacing.
[A.K. Walia, Chief Engineer]:
"We cannot exactly say that it is lack of coordination because we are recording the amount of water we are pumping up and are giving to MC which they have to further distribute. Problem lies with the local pipelines, which were laid back when the British ruled. So they are not adequate enough, and need to be replaced. Hopefully the water scarcity will be resolved soon after the project is finished."
During the summer water shortages are common in Shimla and the surrounding areas.
