In southern China's province of Guizhou, it was a nasty day to be outside on Sunday. Powerful hailstorms and winds battered the province, affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
Hailstorms and strong winds battered southern China, affecting tens of millions of people on Sunday, causing significant economic damage.
A hailstorm hit Guizhou Province, affecting 158-thousand people and killing thousands of poultry.
A Changshun County resident says the storm ripped off the roof of his house.
[Fu Mingkai, Changshun County Resident]:
"We had to protect ourselves with quilts when the first round of hailstones fell. We managed to get out of our house, and we just found the storm had torn off our roof. Most of the tiles were gone and the courtyard was flooded with hailstones."
Another resident says the wind knocked down trees and electricity poles, causing traffic chaos.
[Changshun County Resident]:
"Our house was hit really hard by masses of hailstones as big as eggs. The storm lasted about three minutes, toppling electricity poles. When I got out of the house, I saw many vehicles driving on the road. So I tried to direct traffic through this area in an orderly fashion. I just did what I should."
A rare strong wind and hailstorm also swept Shunde City of Guangdong Province for three minutes, toppling trees and news stands.
In the worst hit village in Changshun County, more than 1,000 acres of crops were completely damaged and 5,000 poultry were killed. The economic loss is in the range of 20 million yuan, which is about three million U.S. dollars.
