Forest officials rescued three leopard cubs from a sugarcane field in India's Gujarat state. Massive deforestation and poaching have forced wild animals to move out of forests in search of food.

Forest officials rescued three leopard cubs from a sugarcane field in Ghata village of India's Gujarat state on Monday.

[J. P. Rathore, Forest Range Officer, Vyara City]:
"A leopardess and her three cubs were In the sugarcane fields in Ghata village. As the villagers tried to catch the leopardess, she ran away and the three cubs have been found. We have collected those three cubs and they are healthy."

Forest officials have kept the cubs in a cage in the field and are waiting for their mother to come get them.

The cubs will be shifted to a rescue center after medical checkup if their mother does not show up.

Massive deforestation, poaching and people encroaching upon forest corridors have forced wild animals to move out of their natural habitat in search of food and water.

Recently there have been numerous incidents of leopards being killed by villagers across India.
