The chief of India's ruling Congress Party, sonia Gandhi criticised the Left Front government of India's West Bengal state over lack of development in the region. The state will have elections starting on Monday, to choose the new government.

Sonia Gandhi, the chief of India's ruling Congress Party, lashed out at the Communist Party of India-Marxist led Left Front government for lack of development in the state of West Bengal.

The Left Front has been in power in West Bengal for more than three decades.

Sonia Gandhi addressed a gathering of locals and supporters in Siliguri. She urged the people to question the Left Front government over the utilization of funds.

[Sonia Gandhi, President, Congress Party]:
"Our government allotted a lot of funds and support to West Bengal without any discrimination but we cannot see the result anywhere. You should question the Left Front government where have they spent all that money?"

She accused the state government of hampering developmental projects undertaken by Congress activists in the region.

[Sonia Gandhi, President, Congress Party]:
"It is wrong that the Left Front government is working only for the party and it's members. It is a shame that the Left Front government is discriminating and hampering developmental projects being undertaken by our (Congress) party members and supporters."

She says the people are distressed under the Communist Party's rule.

[Sonia Gandhi, President, Congress Party]:
"Today the production in the local factories is negligible. One-third of the people are deprived of safe drinking water. Schools and hospitals are in a bad state. The difficulties of our brothers and sisters from the minority are increasing. People from every section of the society are distressed."
