Going Green - The Yamal icebreaker on route in the Siberian sea

2011-04-14 51

The frozen seas of the arctic are being unlocked to clear the path for other vessels so they can take advantage. Crossing the Barentz sea makes a difference of thousands of kilometers on a journey between Europe and Asia, saving fuel and vastly reducing carbon emmissions. The potential offered by this route is a dramatic increase of maritime traffic. The ship is nuclear powered which means low carbon emmission but of cource its a risky polluter if anything goes wrong. The masters of the ship are cautious so risks are avoided. The water purification plant and waste disposal system reduces the ecological impact of the crew to a minimal. Report from CNN senior international correspondent Matthew Chance.
