In southwestern China, paramilitary police have dispersed more than 2,000 villagers who gathered there to protest a hydroelectric dam project.
This protest in Sujiang County, Yunnan Province gathered steam for five days—when hundreds of armed police then came and clashed with the villagers. Around 50 people were injured. Protesters blocked a main road, and hurled stones and bricks at the police.
The building of the nearby Xiangjiaba Dam on the Yangtze River means 40,000 villagers need to be relocated.
According to the Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy, the protesters were angry over the poor quality of the new housing authorities have arranged for them, They were also upset that authorities are refusing to foot the bill to move a local graveyard.
