Mexican Fernando Reina Iglesias has established a new world record for fastest barefoot water skiing in Acapulco.

He was towed by a helicopter while skiing barefoot to reach a speed of 153 miles per hour in his second attempt.

The local businessman and politician for the Partido Verde Ecologista (Green Party) broke the record set in 1989 by American skier Scott Pellaton of 135 miles per hour.

Public notary Manlio Favio Pano witnessed the event and corroborated that Reina reached the record-breaking speed, recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Reina dedicated the record to his hometown and said that it was important to do positive things for the tourist destination.

Acapulco has been the scene of bloody drug cartel turf wars, and taxi drivers have often been targeted for extortion or recruited by the gangs to act as lookouts or to transport drugs.
