Libyans chant anti-Gaddafi slogans and hold prayers in Zawiyah after rebels take control of the city near the capital. The death toll in Libya is estimated to be about 2000.

Libyan tanks are positioned outside the town of Zawiyah.

It is the last checkpoint on the road to the town the Libyan government said had not fallen into rebel hands.

Foreign journalists on Sunday were walked into the city by a resident guarding the rebel checkpoint inside.

The journalists were brought in by minders assigned to them by President Muammar Gaddafi, since they were invited in two days previously.

One of Gaddafi's sons, Saif al-Islam Gaddafi said on Friday that Zawiyah was still under government control and that negotiations would start to calm the situation there, just 31 miles from the capital Tripoli.

But when the journalists arrived in the town, it was clear that the anti-government rebels of Zawiyah firmly held the town.

Anti-aircraft guns were positioned at the entrance seized by soldiers who joined the protesters.

One police commander said 50 percent of the police force had also joined in the anti-government wave in Libya.

The crowds cheered and shouted: "The people want the fall of the regime," using the same slogan that echoed across the Arab world in protests against long-standing authoritarian rulers.

Bullet holes marked charred buildings in Zawiyah, where the fighting had been most intense, while burned-out vehicles lay abandoned in the streets.

[Mohammed Amran, Zawiyah Resident]:
"I feel last night we have shots here and there's a lot of people here. We don't need Muammar anymore... now, here, all the people are together... we love Libya, I hate Muammar Gaddafi."

The scene in Zawiyah, was another indication that Gaddafi's grip on power appeared to be weakening by the day.
