Western Australia hit by floods as rivers peak

Western Australia has experienced severe flooding, leaving towns and villages submerged as rivers peak.

The small town of Carnarvon lies almost 1,000-kilometers north of Perth with a population of some 5,000 and has been worst hit by the flooding.

The downpours have been the result of an intense low pressure system, including the tropical cyclone Carlos and cyclone Diane, which have dumped significant amounts of rain on the region and caused the rivers to spill.

Australia's east coast experienced the worst ever floods to hit the country this summer.

Scientists believe an extremely strong La Nina event is responsible for the unusually wet season.
