Australia's prime minister visited one town devastated by floods. In the town of Swan Hill, floodwaters are expected to reach in days to come.

Australian prime minister Julia Gillard and her partner Tim Mathieson visited the town of Swan Hill in Victoria on Friday.

The town is bracing itself from the rising rivers surrounding it and is preparing for the worst.

Authorities say the water will reach major flood levels on Saturday or Sunday and peak sometime next week.

The prime minister took the trip to Swan Hill to personally thank the people who have been involved in helping the flood-affected communities.

[Julia Gillard, Australian Prime Minister]:
"I do just want to take this opportunity to say 'thank you' to everyone who is doing such a great job. So to our defense force, to the local council, to our members of parliament, who have been supporting, to all of the volunteers, emergency services personnel, Centrelink personnel, Department of Health Services personnel, who have been out here making a difference for people during these floods - a very big 'thank you' from me."

The government imposed a temporary new tax on Thursday to help fund a multi-billion-dollar rebuilding program.

The floods have devastated infrastructure and ruined thousands of homes and businesses across the eastern seaboard over the past month.
