Last year in Israel, 18 women were murdered by their partners. Men who are active in the movement for equality between genders have organized a peace rally calling for fellow men and women to stop violence against women, and for the government to act on the issue. Our correspondent was present at the scene.
A few days before the end of 2010 in the city of Arad in Israel, another woman was murdered by her husband. The mother of seven was the 18th woman to be killed by her partner during the year. In Tel Aviv men from a gender equality group are holding a rally protesting violence against women.
Many men spoke at the rally.
[Aviv Yahalom, Chairman, Equality and Peace Between Genders]:
"We believe that as men we have a special responsibility to take care of and deal with this issue of violence against women. The violence is done to women by men."
This bereaved Druze father whose daughter was murdered three months after giving birth to her son, is asking why.
[Sheikh Amin Kanaan, Kfar Yarka]:
"Why?" She was loyal to you, she did everything."
The violence often surprises neighbors and friends who had no idea about any family problems.
[Sheikh Amin Kanaan]:
"Those men are not alcoholics, psychos, or junkies. All are intelligent people, so what is happening to our society? Why is this happening?"
Sheik Sami Michael is a famous Israeli writer, active in civil rights.
[Sami Michael, President, Association for Civil Rights]:
"We are exposed to the tests of conquest, of security, of war haunting a war and all of this is seeping into Israeli society. I think we are becoming more violent."
[Ran Ben-Moshe, Spokesman, Masculinity Movement]:
"It's about sexism. The fact of the matter is that a man is taught that he is worth more than a woman."
