One of India's famous craft industries is facing tough times with the rising prices of gold, silver and copper. Surat Zari is a precious metal-based embroidery and lining for textiles that's one of the oldest industries in western India.

India's famed industry of surat zari is a precious metal-based embroidery and lining for textiles. In India's Gujarat state, it's facing hard times with the increase in prices of gold, silver, and copper.

These metals are used as raw materials in the manufacture of shining thread.

In the last six years, the zari industry has seen its manufacturing costs rise 50 percent with no substantial increase in demand.

[Shantilalbhai Zariwala, President, Surat Zari Goods Manufacturer Assoc.]:
"The problem is that the rate of raw material in the market has increased a lot. There has been an increase in the prices of silver, copper and gold by almost 30 percent. Thus we are facing a lot of trouble in making zari."

Along with the metals, there has also been an increase in the prices of silk, which is used in the production process.

Traditional craftsmen who have mastered the art of rolling out zari work meticulously to make a tinsel thread out of fine gold, silver and copper wires.

Zari is used for weaving and embroidery all over the country.
