A massive fire has destroyed a plastic factory in northern India. The blaze was so intense that the Indian Air Force were called to help.

A massive fire has engulfed a plastics factory in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state.

Five fire engines rushed to the factory in Allahabad City to fight the blaze.

The fire was so intense that the Indian Air Force were also called to help.

The superintendent of police says that the situation is now under control.

[Subhash Bhagail, Police Superintendent]:
"There were cables lying on the ground which caught fire and after getting information we came here along with five fire engines, the station house officer, area officer and chief fire officer. We also contacted the Rapid Action Force and the Air Force and they have also come here to contain the fire."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

[Subhash Bhagail, Police Superintendent]:
"Right now, it is not proper to comment on the reason behind the accident. We are investigating it and looking into the matter."

Initial indications are that the fire started after an electric pole fell, causing a short circuit.
