Japan has confirmed its first case of H5N1 bird flu since 2007 on a poultry farm in western Japan. However, tests indicate that the virus has not spread beyond chickens.
On Friday, Japan's farm ministry confirmed the country's first outbreak of H5N1 bird flu since 2007.
The highly pathogenic strain was found on a poultry farm in western Japan.
Chickens which died on the farm in western Japan this week had the H5N1 strain, which is a higher-risk version of the virus last found in poultry in central Japan back in 2009.
[Eiji Ishigaki, Section Chief Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries]:
"We have confirmed that this is a strain of highly-pathogenic avian influenza."
The farm, in Shimane Prefecture, keeps about 20-thousand hens for their eggs. All the hens have been culled and will be burned and buried.
The ministry says that tests on four poultry farms within a six mile radius of the affected farm were negative, and the farms will resume shipping eggs on Friday.
