Australia is facing floods on one coast and fires on the other. In New South Wales in the east, the town of Coonamble is on high alert for floods, while out in Western Australia, firefighters are battling a bushfire that's been raging for days.

Australia's town of Coonamble in New South Wales is on high alert for flooding Wednesday, after heavy rainfall lashed New South Wales.

More than a thousand people were given an early warning this morning to prepare to evacuate should the rains continue.

The Castlereagh River swelled and was threatening to burst its banks.

The Bureau of Meteorology later downgraded the threat.

[Bob Noble, Superintendent]:
"A warning for a possible, potential evacuation was issued, obviously that was revised earlier this morning with river heights further up stream but we are still in a watching mode in relation to that."

Out in Karnup, Western Australia, firefighters could do with the rain as they continue to battle a bushfire which has been burning for two days.

Police say the fire is likely to have been started by arsonists.
