A 38-year-old-man has been arrested in Sweden for a series of shootings apparently targeting immigrants. He is suspected of one murder and several instances of attempted murder.

The chief prosecutor in Malmo told a news conference on Sunday that she ordered the arrest of a man in the city.

The man is suspected of being behind a series of shootings, which appear to target immigrants.

[Solveig Vollstad, Chief Prosecutor]:
"The man was later arrested around 17:30 (GMT) yesterday evening and after initial questioning I decided that the arrest should remain and he is arrested on probable cause for murder on October 10 2009 in Malmo and also for attempted murder, in seven cases, from October 10, 2009 to October 2010."

Police say two weapons were found at the man's home, but the man denies the charges.

The arrest was made following a tip-off. Prosecuting authorities will have to decide by Tuesday whether to remand the man in custody.

Police say what the shootings had in common was that they targeted people with immigrant backgrounds.

The only person who did not have an immigrant background was a woman who was killed in October last year. But she was with a man who had an immigrant background when the shooting happened, and he sustained serious injuries.

The murder appears to be the first in a long row of unexplained shootings in Malmo. The city has many immigrants, and many people have been afraid to leave home at night.

Police say the victims of the shootings don’t know why they were being targeted, and that no victims had any known criminal records.

On October 22, a man said he was shot at while cycling near the city center. And only one day later, a family with an immigrant background woke up to discover a bullet hole in the balcony window and in a curtain.
