At least 56 people are dead following Thailand's worst floods in decades.

Almost three million people have been affected in 25 provinces.

Excess water from reservoirs in the north is flowing to low-lying land in central Thailand -- including the capital Bangkok which sits only two meters above sea level.

Here, residents on the outskirts of Bangkok wade through knee-deep water. But inner Bangkok areas have so far remained safe.

Many provinces could remain flooded for several weeks after heavy rains led to high water levels in reservoirs, forcing authorities to release some of the water.

The Royal Irrigation Department says things could get back to normal by mid-November, providing the area is not hit by more downpours.

The rainy season normally runs from mid-May to late-September, but this year's rains started late and are ending even later.
