Jerusalem Exhibition Highlights Dangers Of Heart Disease

In Israel's capital city, a new and original way was found to raise public awareness about the dangers of heart disease. A huge vein was constructed, allowing people to walk through and experience what happens to our body's arteries when there is too much cholesterol. Our correspondents brings us the story.

In the city of Jerusalem, where the ancient and new forever meet, in front of the Old City walls, a huge tent was set up in the shape of a vein of the human circulatory system, with an audio-visual presentation.

By passing through the simulated artery, one can experience the effect of cholesterol when it sinks into the arterial walls, causing a blockage.

[Speaker Inside The Audio-Visual Exhibit]:
"You are in the compound that simulates an artery. High levels of cholesterol are a significant factor in morbidity, mortality and heart disease. Preventive treatment (prophylaxis) may reduce the risk of the heart disease. Please consult with your doctor."

Jerusalem's mayor Nir Barkat allocated a few minutes from his busy schedule, and upon exiting the compound was presented with balloons that describe the dangers of cholesterol.

[Dr. Joseph Sarig, Chairman, Department for Prevention of Heart Disease]:
"People all over the world are only partially aware. The importance of this day is to emphasize the risks of cholesterol. Reaching low levels of cholesterol is a very important tool in the prevention of heart disease."

After crossing the imaginary artery, many members of the public took advantage of a blood test to measure the level of their cholesterol.

[Nurit Brom, Retired Citizen]:
"I wanted to check my cholesterol level in greater detail. You have to keep an eye on it. I'm aware of that.”

After receiving her test results, Nurit Brom went to the hospital to consult a heart disease specialist.
