A British contractor, freed by his Somali kidnappers, arrives in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. The British citizen was held for 5 days. Prime Minister Cameron says he is pleased to hear the news.

A British contractor, Frans Barnard, who was freed on Tuesday by his Somali kidnappers, flew out of Somalia to the Kenyan capital Nairobi on Thursday.

Officials in central Somalia say Barnard—a Nairobi-based security consultant who was working for the British charity "Save the Children"—was freed about 150 miles from Adado Town where he was abducted last Thursday.

The kidnapping of foreign nationals within Somalia has become relatively rare.

This is because nearly all aid agencies have barred expatriate workers from operating there, after hardline Islamist militants gained control of more territory.

Barnard and a Somali co-worker, Bashiir Yusuf, were seized last Thursday when masked gunmen stormed a guesthouse compound in Adado, near the border with Ethiopia.

Yusuf was freed hours later.

Save the Children had been assessing the feasibility of starting up a humanitarian project in Somali.

A local official says 9 suspected kidnappers detained by security forces have been handed an automatic 3-month jail sentence by the chief regional administrator, pending their trial.

According to the charity, no cash changed hands to secure Barnard's release during negotiations led by local clan elders.
