Downtown Cairo is littered with European-style buildings erected toward the end of the 19th Century. But many of these architectural treasures -- in the Haussmanian or Belle Epoque-style -- are now close to ruin, after years of neglect. Recent years however, have seen investors stepping in to buy up many of the properties. Critics say this is nothing to do with preserving the city's heritage and everything to do with making money.
