Climate change protesters blockade refinery

Hundreds of climate change protesters have attempted to blockade fuel tankers at a major refinery

The demonstration began on Saturday morning, when 12 women handcuffed themselves to lorries parked to deliberately block the main road leading to the refinery in Coryton, Essex.

Demonstrators tried to stop traffic getting to and from the site which they accuse of exacerbating climate change, said a spokesman for the Crude Awakening demonstration.

Hundreds more protesters had descended on the site by Saturday afternoon, when a heavy police presence was also in evidence.

The refinery's operator, Petroplus, said deliveries were operating normally.
