Kashmir’s Dal Lake to Get More Sewage Treatment Plants

The state government in India’s state of Jammu and Kashmir has installed two more sewage treatment plants on the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar.

[Erfan Yaseen, Vice-Chairman, Lakes and Waterways Development Authority]: (gender unknown, Urdu)
"Five sewage treatment plants with a capacity of eight million gallons a day are under construction. So much sewage can be cleaned by each of these plants everyday."

But the locals say that the two new sewage treatment plants will not be enough to clean Dal Lake.

[Imtiyaz Ahmed, Local]: (gender unknown, Urdu)
"Nothing will change with only two sewage treatment plants. There should be at least five or 10 plants like these, because Dal is a very big area. The currently installed filtration plants don't work properly and sometimes they don't work at all, and that is why it is a must to have a minimum of 10 plants."

Authorities have blamed the unrest in the Kashmir Valley for delays in work, but remain confident of completing it by June 2011.
