Chavez claims election victory, challenges opposition

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez claimed election victory as results on Tuesday showed his leftist party winning a majority of seats in the National Assembly but losing its crushing two-thirds supermajority. The opposition coalition claimed to have won a majority of popular votes but Chavez sarcastically challenged them to call a referendum on his rule, six years after he won a resounding victory in a similar vote.
