Nestor Kirchner is the former president of Argentina and currently a power broker in his wife's government.

Kirchner oversaw the country's recovery from a devastating economic crisis during his term from 2003 to 2007. He is currently the secretary general of Unasur, the Union of South America Nations.

Officials say he is in stable condition after being rushed to hospital with heart trouble for the second time this year.

[Alfredo Scoccimarro, Presidential Spokesperson]:
"He is doing very well. He watched the basketball game and is very happy that Argentina won."

Doctors said the 60 year old was recovering well after undergoing an angioplasty.

[Alfredo Scoccimarro, Presidential Spokesperson]:
"Dr. Nelson Kirchner, on the first day after a coronary angioplasty, is evolving satisfactorily. Post-procedural studies were conducted and the patient's results indicate a normal evolution."

Kirchner is expected to run for president next year. If victorious, he would replace his spouse, Cristina Kirchner.
