French minister "considered resignation" over Roma

France's foreign minister Bernard Kouchner has said he thought of resigning over controversial measures introduced to deport thousands of Roma gypsies. Kouchner, a high-profile member of president Nicolas Sarkozy's cabinet, is the latest to speak out on an issue which has drawn criticism from the UN, religious leaders, and governments across Europe. The decision to raid and dismantle "unauthorised" traveller camps has been seen by critics as a populist attempt to boost ratings for President Sarkozy -- and nearly half the French population say they support the measures.
