The crew of a Korean fishing trawler that capsized in the Southern Ocean earlier in the week arrived safely in New Zealand in the early hours of Friday.

At least three men were declared dead and three others missing after the Oyang 70 capsized early Wednesday morning… some 500 miles off New Zealand's south island in the cold waters of the Southern Ocean.

Several vessels joined the search for the missing crew.

Filipinos, Koreans, Indonesians and Chinese nationals are among the crew who made it to dry land.

The survivors were given new clothing and money and were put into a hotel in Christchurch.

[Rev. Neil Struthers, Mission to Seafarers]: (male, English)
"It seems that three went down with the ship including the captain and three died in the water before they could be rescued."

It is unclear why the boat turned over. An investigation into the matter is underway.
